How do I get my Emerson 32″ LCD HDTV to work connected directly to cable (via coaxial without a box)?
I purchased a 32″ Emerson LCD HDTV with Digital Tuner today to replace my very old tv. When I connect the new TV directly to my cable(without a box) it doesn’t detect (via autoscan) all the channels I was receiving on my old TV and the channels it does detect have a terrible picture (like old bunny ear picture). However, when I move the tv to a room with a cable box I’m able to receive all channels very clearly). Comcast states I don’t have to have a box to receive cable to the new tv but something isn’t right.
If your cable service is like mine (Comcast), the channels received without a cable box are all analog except for a few standard-def digital channels (requires a set with a QAM tuner).
An HDTV is optimized for digital input and has to compromise an analog signal to make it work. Unfortunately, it’s normal for analog sources to look better on an old analog TV because that’s what they were built for.
When you connect your TV to your cable box, the box may still be receiving analog signals at its input but its output is the best signal it can create on a single channel or even better, via component cables or an HDMI cable. That’s why you get a better picture that way.
