How does an upconverted DVD look on HDTV?
They say when you buy an upconverted dvd player along with the HDMI wire, it can look close to High Def quality….is this true? How sharp does it look?
Yes there is a difference but how big depends on your reference. If you had a great DVD player before and connected progressively with component then you were already getting a very good picture (much better than upconverted standard def TV signals). If however you are used to DVD connected with s-video or composite video(Yellow video cable) then you may be amazed how much better upconverted DVD can look. Not all upconverting is the same though. If you spend $3500 on a DVDO scaler then an upconverted DVD will look almost as good a Blu-Ray. If however you are using the built in scaler in the DVD player or Blu-Ray machine the difference will be greater between DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Bare in mind that there is a difference in the audio as well if connected to a newer receiver.
