What cable to matchup SPDIF output on computer sound card with coaxial or optical input on speakers?
My computer soundcard (Creative Audigy2 ZS PCI) has an output for a SPDIF digital. My speakers have inputs for analog RCA jacks, coaxial and optical. How do I match them up? Can’t find my instructions and couldn’t find it on Creative website.
SPDIF is a file transfer interface and is designed for transferring audio files from one device to another, such as from computer to DAT or vice versa. I have never heard of connecting speakers directly to the SPDIF connector since the impedance of the interface (75 ohms) doesn’t match that of speakers (generally 8 ohms). Theoretically, it may be possible to establish this sort of connection by using an impedance matching device to reduce the 75 ohm output of the SPDIF down to the 8 ohms required by your speakers. However, there may be other factors that would prevent this from working, such as compression of the digital signal which would cause the frequency content of the audio to not be reproduced correctly by your speakers since they don’t have decompression capability.
