Watching old VCR tapes safely?
I have a DVD/ VCR combo that has a DVD drive that won’t work, and I got it off of my mom because the VCR part still works. Now I had a nice recent VCR myself a while back ago, but once I started watching old tapes, the head started to deteriorate. I could tell because I would put newer tapes in and only see static-y lines. I disassembled the VCR and tried cleaning the head but I ended up damaging it and making it worse because it got a few scratches on it.
So, now that I have a newer VCR, how do I watch old tapes safely without deteriorating the head? I’m aware of head cleaners for the VCR, but is there such a cleaner that revives old tapes safely? Even though I don’t have a video capture card or a VCR to DVD recorder, some of the tapes I have are retro YouTube gold and I’d really like to watch old shows and commercials again.

It seems that you have the same addiction as me, well i had the same trouble years ago when i discovered a few old tapes on VCR of mine that i was forgotten then i tried to watch it but my vcr got dirty so i had to open it up and tried to clean but still was getting dirty so what i did is this, I took a rage made of cotton and soak it in alcohol then i opened the top of the tape and i cleaned directly to the black stripes and it worked
