Feet Coaxial Cable
Raising my FM transmitting antenna 5 feet. Any improvement in range?
I’m currently at around 32 feet. Would five feet make any difference. Or 10. I’m using 50 ohm coaxial cable and transmitting with 20 watts. Also, my antenna is tuned correctly, for those who are wondering.
It would depend on what is in your immediate surrounding area. If the extra height is going to help clear local obstacles (like a house or small hill or sign) then yes it should help but if you are in an already flat open area it will probably not help at all.
What type of cable do you have?
Generally, the larger diameter the center conductor is, the less loss you will have per a given freq and cable length.
Assuming you are using standard generic RG58 cable, it typically has loss of 4.9 bB for 100 feet at 100 MHz.
Simply switching to RG8 and your loss is now 1.4 dB for 100 feet at 100 MHz
4.9 – 1.4 = 3.5 dB
Since every 3 dB doubles your power, switching your cable cuts your losses to your antenna in half effectively doubling your transmitter power!
The only downside is good cable is expensive and depending your lengths, a 40 watt transmitter might be a cheaper way to double your power than improving your cable..

The rg8 they use is mini 8, the correct rg8 is similar to rg213
