Is the 1080p worth the money over the 720p for a 52 inch set?
I’m buying a 50 – 52 inch LCD TV. I am seeing the prices for a 1080p almost double the cost of a 720p set. Is it really worth an extra grand to get the 1080?
also, any other features that you should make sure you get?
I don’t have a PS3 OR XBOX but I do have a PS2 and a Wii. I also have FIOS digital cable and a DVD player.

I have a 52′ Sony Bravia.
It’s amazing. It goes to 1080p.
You have to buy one. They look so great with an HD cable receiver on the HD channels.
I also like playing my PlayStation 3 connected to it by an HDMI cable. It’s awesome.
Get the set with the HIGHEST ‘p’ number possible … it will be at least four times better than the ’smaller number set’ and therefore you will get a SHARPER, BRIGHTER picture.
Regardless of the TV size, you need to consider the expected video sources. If you have no 1080p sources, then buy a 720p source. When you watch 720p sources on a 1080p TV, the image will be scaled and make 720p look bad.
Since I don’t have a BluRay disc player, HD-DVD player, Xbox360, or PS3, there was no point for me to buy a 1080p TV. I bought a 720p plasma and is perfect for standard DVD, Wii and HDTV.
Oh hell yes. I just got a Bravia XBR4 52″. Simply crushes anything else out there right now, save for some ridiculous $20000+ Bang/Olufsen setup which is only marginally better. To be honest, any of the Bravias will give you a great picture if you don’t want the XBR4. I have not seen anything else from another brand that is worthwhile after quite a bit of research. Go to a store and do a head to head with the picture on a Bravia vs. any other TV. Other things? HD DVD player, HDMI cables, some type of surge protection system (Monster makes a good one), Surround sound, HD TV (Fios is now the best) etc.
Another example is the laptop I’m using now. 1920×1200 resolution 17″screen. Unbelievable. My eyes couldn’t go back to anything else.
If I were you, I would get a 1080p with a smaller TV rather than waste money on a lower resolution set. It is that important. You will regret it later if you don’t. Lower resolution screens of any kind are inferior. The lowest resolution thing I own is a portable DVD player, and once the technology for that progresses, I am upgrading. Being a resolution junkie is a good thing. Obviously, if you don’t care that much about picture quality you could get a 720p Vizio or whatever. But you’ve been warned.
