Will a hdmi upconvert dvd player work with a 52 inch LCD TV?

I recently bought a sharp aquos 52 inch LCD TV. I bought an upconvert DVD player (Sony DVPNS75H) and connected it with a HDMI. The quality is still poor – very blocky and fuzzy. Is there a limit to how large a tv an upconvert dvd player will be effective with? Is 52 inches simply too big?
Yes, I did select 1080i from the DVD menu.

i don’t want to sound retarded, but did you select 1080i from the menu of the dvd player,, because I think they are shiped outputing 480i, even to the hdmi as a default.
Try a Brand New DVD in wide screen. Some don’t show very well.
