Stereo Dubbing Cable
Question about recording/editing audio…software and hardware.?
I recorded parts of a song on my keyboard, and want to edit on my computer with Audacity.
My sound card: SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
Cable that goes from the headphone jack in the keyboard to the mic jack in the laptop:

My laptop is:
Sony VAIO VGN-FZ290
Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20 GHz
Whenever I play the song back on the laptop, it doesn’t sound as good. But Audacity plays other songs perfectly. Is the issue the mic slot, the cable, the sound card, or all of them?
I’ve used Audacity to record quick demo CDs for bands so it certainly has the quality for good recording..
It’s not what you’ve got but how you use it.
Any attenuation (reduction in signal strength) over a short run of cable would not be perceivable.
An unbalanced, high impedance cable under six feet in length will not pick up any noticeable audio interference.
Balanced, low impedance cables are generally only used for longer microphone runs of cable.
Using the headphone out from the keyboard select line in from the input section list in Audacity even though you may only have a mic in jack. The headphone out signal is high impedance and needs to be matched to the input level. The mic in setting is low impedance so a mismatch will certainly cause distortion and problems matching levels.
The output level from the keyboard then needs to be matched with the recording level in the program to produce a distortion free recording.
The loudest peaks of the waveform should be just within the upper and lower boundaries of the waveform window.
99.9% of a good recording is how it’s recorded rather than what with.
Been doing it for 25+ years.
Trial and error is your friend.
There’s no such thing as plug and play with recording.
