Why aren’t Fiber Optic Cables ?
I know the TOSLINK cable is used for audio, and I was just wondering if there’s any real reason there isnt a fiber optic application for Video?
Good question:
A copper cable can carry multiple signals of different frequencies at one time.
An optical cable is basically 1 frequency that flashes a light on/off very fast. (Think morse code very fast). We do not have the technology to flash a light so fast that it could carry enough information for a HD frame of video.
We could send several colors of light to mimic what we do with copper wires and different frequencies. But – we dont have a way to align the end of the fiber to 3-8 different light sources of different colors. And we dont have a single ‘light bulb’ that we can control to produce multiple colors of light at the same time.
